Discovery Ski Area opened in 1974 under the name Discovery Basin with a few runs and a rope tow. Its humble beginnings reflected the area’s small-town character, where skiing was as much about community as it was about carving turns. Early-on locals like Bob Winninghoff and Ed Lord hiked and skied the uncharted terrain that would become Discovery ski area.

Originally it was developed by investors from Spokane combined with ski enthusiasts looking for some skiing opportunities better than the nearby Wraith Hill. Then, in June of 1984 Discovery was bought in an SBA auction, by Peter Pitcher who from his time in the mountains of New Mexico, had experience in the ski industry. He was looking for an opportunity to run his own ski area and was enticed by the prospect of what Discovery could offer.

Pitcher quickly turned his attention to growing the area. Over the course of 25 years, he installed seven chairlifts opening up access to a variety of terrain.

The front face features wide, groomed runs perfect for beginners and intermediate, while the backside offers some of the most challenging expert terrain in Montana, with steep chutes, powder bowls, and glades. This diverse layout allows skiers and snowboarders to progress at their own pace, making it a favorite for both families and thrill-seekers. And freestyle enthusiasts can test their skills in one of Discovery’s terrain parks.

Those who prefer a quieter adventure can explore the surrounding area’s Nordic skiing and snowshoeing trails or sit on a high spot on the mountain and enjoy views of the mountains of the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness and Georgetown Lake.
